Fact-checking on fire
Fires in the Amazon, Arctic and Australia are causing right and proper concern around the world. Fact-checkers at the Beeb, however, have tried to put recent outbreaks into historical context, and thrown up some curious observations. While the scale of devastation in these environmentally sensitive and irreplaceable areas is truly terrifying, and has drastic implications for climate change, the only region where fires are actually reaching record levels is sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the size of these blazes, however, they’re not drawing the same attention because they’re not yet reaching critical areas (such at the DRC rainforest).
