Down with RICA!

Edward Snowden himself was taken aback by the implications of the South African High Court’s ruling on the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication Related Information Act (RICA). For most of us, RICA is the thing we do when we hand over ID docs to purchase a new SIM card. For the state, it’s a powerful tool which has been deployed for eavesdropping on perceived political enemies. In a case brought by investigative outlet amaBhugane, Transparency International and the Right to Know Campaign, judges ruled that RICA is unconstitutional, and also took government to task for mass surveillance programmes carried out by the State using other legislation. It’s a big win for all of us, and a heartfelt thanks to those involved. (AO)
