European explorers of the 18th Century have a lot left to answer for, but tracing their journeys sure is purdy. This collection of visualisations (including an animated video) plots the routes of 300 000 voyages around the world over 100 years. The visualisations aren’t just about global trade routes, they include maps of wildlife sightings and weather observations recorded in log books. Unexpected insights – there’s a whole bunch of data missing from the early 1800s thanks to a fire in the Royal Navy’s archive.
