It’s comics! It’s data viz! It’s very sad! But it’s so human! Gramener Story Lab’s dive into the world of Afghan refugees and why they flee their country is just beautiful — it’s like Raymond Briggs for the internet age. And yet as lovely as it is, it only came second in the Center for Global Data Vizualization’s refugee storytelling hackathon. What on Earth could have been better? Judges opted for the depth of Mohamad Waked’s The Unwelcomed, which also combines traditional viz with some beautiful storytelling and that decision must have been hard.
