Much has been written about the appalling conditions that social media moderators are forced to work under, watching the evil on the internet so you don’t have to (without things like minimum wage or counselling). Unsurprisingly, things aren’t much better for those who pick up odd-jobs as an Amazon Mechanical Turk, who fill in the time automating and transcribing stuff until the bots are smart enough to take over. This look behind the curtain at Gizmodo tells the story of folk being paid 50 cents a pop to be surprised by material that can bring them to tears.
