Corona at the data conference

The old adage that you should never become the story is a vain hope for attendees at last week’s NICAR conference in New Orleans. NICAR is arguably the big annual event for datajournalists in the calendar. Many delegates will have been looking to sharpen their data interrogation skills to improve coronavirus coverage, yesterday, however, the organisers released news yesterday that one attendee has tested positive for Covid-19. As a result, newsrooms around the US – including the likes of the New York Times – have been instigating emergency protocols and telling people who were there to stay at home for two weeks. Nieman has full coverage of the reactions from media houses and Twitter.

News organizations are reacting quickly. The New York Times is having all of its NICAR-attending staffers self-quarantine for two weeks.
