News that wide scale power outages may be returning to South Africa as people go back to work and monopoly electricity producer Eskom suffers more technical failures may have elicited groans this week, but spare a thought for the people of Lebanon. Just a year or so ago the country seemed – superficially at least – to be on an economic upper even though inequality was soaring (sound familiar?). Then came political unrest, followed by Covid-19, and collapse. Colleagues of mine in the region are trying to remain upbeat, but sometimes a simple chart says it all.
