Jake Scott’s analysis of popular song lyrics scraped from modern music box Spotify starts off on a surprising and positive note. The representation of women in top tunes far outweighs the representation of men. And then it gets very dark, very quickly. Male artists sing about men making money, dying, running, getting dirty. The females in their songs are apparently more keen on… let’s just say there’s a number of variations on a theme which is not for polite company. In songs sung by women, on the other hand, the word “he” is more likely to be followed by words like “sweet”, or “giving”, while the proverbial she is “glad”, “loves” and yet still “cheats”.
