Teaching an old map new tricks

A very cool project by the University of Utrecht has geo-mapped over 1,000 old maps from the Ackersdijck Collection (a 19th Century Professor of Economics whose widow donated his map collection to the University) onto their modern lat-longs. You can view the maps through the online tool Georeferencer, which lets you view both the old and new maps through a variety of overlays, letting you wander back through time to a period when the corners of the world were ruled by dragons. (Here’s a great old map of South Africa.)
